The first real land survey of Ireland was carried out as part of the "Griffith Survey" started in 1855. This mapped all townlands in the country an listed the owners and occupiers of all land in the country. This was for the purpose of valuation so that rates and taxes could be collected. The survey of Sligo was completed in 1858.
